InDesign & Illustrator Certified Instructor & Graphic Designer
I love to teach, but I also love to design, and get in the trenches with a good catalog. I actually enjoy working in a long InDesign document, facing the same trials and challenges that every designer or production artist faces. It makes me a much better instructor.
Below are a few links to recent projects I've completed.
Imagine traveling to all 50 states, with your 4 boys, all in a span of 10 years. This family wanted a poster to commemorate this feat, and I was happy to deliver. We assembled one photo of the family from each state, and placed it into the shape of each state in a map of the United States. Take a look!
Infographics are all the rage. They make complex information and data easy to read and understand. These two time lines I created helped make a very in depth lecture and discussion easy to follow and understand. I started creating this in Illustrator, but quickly switched to InDesign because of the Paragraph, Character and Object Styles as well as the new Paragraph Borders and Shading features, which were used on the Vertical Time line instead of a table.

I've been working on the Kinter Catalog for the past 5 years. When I received the files, each product was in a separate text frame, the table, the photo and the line art were also in separate frames, and the entire product was grouped together. There were 2-5 groups of products on each page. Each year, new products are added and others are removed or rearranged, creating the need for a continuous flow for the products. I made each section a threaded frame with all the products one after another, I turned the tables into a Table Style and Anchored all of the photos and line art so they would stay with the product description. It took some time on the front end, but each new catalog has been easier because of the up front preparation.

I'm working on my 20th catalog for this fine art paperweight auction company. Three times each year, they provide me with 325+ new photos and an excel spreadsheet of the product description. Using Scripts, Paragraph Styles, Object Styles, Bridge, Find and Change and other InDesign layout tricks, I can have a completed 62 page proof back to them within the day. When I took on the project 8+ years ago, I had asked how long it took the previous designer to have a proof back and the answer was about 5-6 weeks. InDesign allows me the flexibility to be accurate and fast with all of my documents.

A Park District Brochure has so many working parts. There are word files of the offered classes, Excel tables of prices, photos of the residents enjoying those classes and many rounds of proofing. Using a carefully crafted template, I created Paragraph Styles to allow me to quickly apply the formatting to hundreds of paragraphs of classes quickly. Object Styles, Scripts, Tables, Table of Contents and Find and Change allows me produce a great looking and functional document in record time.

A favorite local Bartlett restaurant was in need of some marketing, a web site and a menu design. I worked closely with the owner to make a Menu that can be modified easily, and a web site in Adobe Muse that was simple and didn't break the bank.
